Read the articles. This prompted me to load up the LSP demo version and just evaluate the competition. Needless to say I am definitely dedicated to Aurora - so much easier for my mind to grasp!
I dabbled alot with Vixen before I ever orderd the first ACx16 and understood what was going on there. It's nice to see the comparisons in the article. Edited by bdkeen - 08 Jun 2009 at 3:42pm |

A few of my "gripes".
They lump all the programs in the article as "alternatives" to LOR - implying they are somehow inferior to it; like having a prescription filled with "generic" medicine! Aurora does NOT require a "high powered PC" to sequence. Have used an "ancient" Pentium"D" with 512MB RAM and had no problems other than rendering long W2E's - which took quite awhile. And Borealis will run perfectly on a 700MHz P3! No mention of how Aurora came about (purely my opinion); which sprang from the loins of LOL-Player when a flakey Spectrum wouldn't work. Only reason I mention this is from going over my correspondence (I save everything  ) with Michael from years back, and my cajoling him to market the Player.No mention of that other program (can't recall the name....) being based on the Labelled Spectrum Previously 2.0 And yeah, caught that ID-10-T error about Spectrum still being "available".  |

I agree with LC, unless you are doing large W2E or trying to copy and paste 50 channels at once, you do not need much of a computer to run Aurora. I run it fine on a orignal P4 sony with 512mb and it runs fine.

But it just seems like politics as usual over at Planet Christmas. Though if a thread emerges over there about this article, I may have to make a few comments that will be sure to get me banned again. It's been at least a year, so I'm about due.  |

Yeah, a few facts are off a bit, but that's reporting... nothing new there. When a reporter (in this case Chuck) condenses 2 hours of discussion over Mexican food into a 2 page article some details are going to be lost in the noise. I guess the distinction to clarify is that the sequencer portion recommends a larger PC (but not big by any means... were're talking 1GHz/512MB minimum recommended here), but it will run just fine on the minimum requirements as well. The scheduler portion will run perfect on the bare minimum P3-700 and probably even less (but I don't want to certify Aurora as compatible with hardware older than a P3-700 due to the support issues that will come with ancient PCs).
If there is any portion of the hardware for the sequencer I'd recommend to upgrade it would be RAM. It is much better to sequence on a P3-700 with 1GB or RAM than a P4-2GHz with only 256MB RAM. This is because the graphics for the entire grid can be stored in RAM instead of being paged from disk. There are benefits to a faster CPU with Aurora (faster spectral rendering on sequence creation), but the RAM benefits are far more. Copy/Paste spped issues are being corrected in the code for this season.
As for cheap shots at the competition... tempting, but I don't play that game. Aurora can stand on its own merits. Edited by LightsOnLogan - 09 Jun 2009 at 7:51am |
