All,

Wow has it been a busy week and a half.  The 1.0 launch of Aurora didn't go as smooth as planned as there were a number of bugs that we didn't catch during beta testing.  The first entire week was spent doing nothing but processing new licenses (we've just more than doubled our customer list in only a week), monitoring three forums and email, dealing with the installer issues, and collecting all of the data necessary to test and fix the bugs.

Fortunately, most of the bugs, while major annoyances to you, are relatively minor corrections for us.  This means they should be fixed quickly.

Here's the plan: The next version of Aurora is scheduled for September 19.  If all goes well, this will fix 95% or more of the bugs out there.  The remaining 5% that are system specific will then be taken care of on a case by case basis after the release is out.  If I seem a little more silent and/or slower to respond to email than usual it is because I am "in the trenches" working on multiple fixes.  The beta testers will be busy next week as well!

Thank you for your patience,
Michael Miller

I think it went fairly smoothly from my end. First main release to the masses of software that manages hardware and only minor bugs and a few specific oddities... Pretty good in my book.

Not trying to do a ha ha nanny boo ba here, but I did not notice any errors with the 1.0 release. Do you think that is becuase I had the original .2 installed on my computer? It seems that many of the errors were from folks that just switched over. Or it could be that they just use the application completly different then myself too.

Michael,
I think you handled the increase in customers very professionally and I think we all understand the time it takes to get this stuff tweaked. All I know is I'm sequencing away without locking up, errors popping up, and I can save my work and know its saved.  The minor issues can be temporarily worked around and I'm looking forward to seeing those minor bugs squished, but so far there's not any that have stopped sequencing progress.

One thing I have noticed is that with increasing regularity is that LOR2 (if installed) goes totally ape**** when co-habitating with Aurora. You can start Aurora, and LOR2 pops up all on its own and wants to start repairing itself. If allowed to do so, then Aurora reasserts its Alpha dog status and repairs itself. Then later on LOR2 gets a hissy and tries to repair itself - ad infinum.LOL

It all boils down to those three OCX files that both apps want to use; and is becoming apparent that one or the other makes some subtle change either to the file or the registry that the other app doesn't like.

I am rather pleased with how smooth 1.0 went. From being a former developer and a 13 year Microsoft beta tester (maybe I should say alpha tester as they seem to release the Beta version to the public as their 'new' version) you have released a fairly well thought out application.   I have only had one real issue that I couldn't work around and you know about it and are slaving away right now to make me (errr, all of us) happy with your application.  Clap

I think you have done well.

I woke up in the hospital this morning (not important for the purposes of this thread, just really sick) and it dawned on my that today was Friday(the 19th) and I have a lot of time on my hands for a few days (useful for programming light strings)

Are we still on for todays update?  I had my wife bring in my laptop so I could make some use of all this new free time I am going to have for the next few days.

If it isn't coming out today please send me your 96 channel shows of some tiny violin playing 'Im Sorry' or some other unsympathetic sequence.  D-light has made it clear that the hurricane will make me wait a few more weeks before I get my new boxes anyways.

I wonder what the hospital would do if i had my wife drag a controller up here with some lights for my room? There is certainly enough dedicated power outlets in the room... Big%20smile

Hope you get better soon!

No beta tester update has been issued yet. But like you said, D-Light is likely a week behind schedule, so everything should work out okay. Even us testers don't have the FireFly yet.

First, I hope you get better soon......but I'd love to see the nurse expression when she walks in the room and see's blinking lights...........or you could play a joke, make a sequence  that matches the beep on the heart monitor....then when she come in to check on you, play the sequence and tell her you hooked up the lights to the heart monitor so you could see your heart beat.....Tongue

Man, I cant even guilt a new release out.. Cry

That is alright, There isnt much to do here other that watch tv or flirt with nurses. While they seem to like being flirted with the seem to get alittle testy with me messing with the equipment.  I can only imagine their responses for  my installing equipment that is totaly foriegn to them that mimicks/mocks their activities.

I can still wait on the ramp fix.  I really need to have it no later than mid October.

I found about 300 MB of Halloween wavs and that will work are pretty small and can be used as great transition sounds.  I will post a great link I found for Halloween music in another forum.

No update today... it should be soon though.  As indicated, we haven't gone through a beta test iteration yet, so Wednesday appears to be the earliest.  The ramp thing is one that I can guarantee will be fixed because it used to work and I know what I did to break it.

I had a family member go into the hospital this week as well... which has played a part in the delay.

On a serious side, Thanks for the prayers and whatever else may have been done. i hope no one really sacrificed pony_god to the volcano like they told me they did but I haven't seen any posts from him today.

Anyone have any breakthrough ideas in the last few days? I still have a nice recovery period at home yet to come and am looking for something new to try out as i can actually put my hands on my programming pc again.

Yeah I'm kinda of sad since some of my Halloween sequences have issues with long effects (on random fading shimmers v1.0 of the S/W doesn't work). I was hoping to see the new version before I put up my lights for Halloween, but the lights will go up this weekend )

Thought that was supposed to be a pure virgin...? I'm not exactly what you would call "pure"... ;)

Had an out of town conferance and couldn't really fire up the boards while Tara was watching behind me. There wasn't any Internet in the conference so I couldn't get caught up there either.

However I _tried_ to start a new sequence, but since all of my sequences now have an arch, I can't use any of then as channel bases to import... :(

Just erase the Arch and redraw them with lines..I did that and it works fine..when they get the arch command fixed, you can redraw them.....just use that one sequence for your new seqeunces until then.

How about a list of bugs that are being fixed?
I know that this whole locking up at the "Decompiling Data For Editing" stage and needing to reboot is getting annoying.
That's really my only concern at this point. Well, importing and editing arches too, but not as bad.

The complete set of bug fixes are still upcoming (taking much longer than expected), but I know several of y'all have October shows starting tomorrow.  Rather than wait on a release until everything is ready, I'm rolling just the ramp fix into an intermediate release which went out to the beta testers today.  The ramp fix will be available sometime this week for certain.

Other than the ramps I haven't really had any issues that would cause show problems. That is the big one for me and probably most of us that troll this area.  I (and I think WE as a group) appreciate the efforts.

Hope all is doing well on your side of the monitor now.

Not heard anything in the Beta Testing area. We did pick up the interim release that fixed the ramp issues, but not heard anything since.

I suspect he's working on the other fixes and bringing up functionality for Firefly.

BTW - From what I've seen (at least in my case) my Halloween shows have been rock solid for over a week now, running every night without any issues whatsoever.

The partial beta was  released to fix the ramp issue so the guys with halloween shows could get them running.   I think the next version is fixing a few other issue as well.

I know I know.... as LC said the bug list grew very rapidly beyond what was fixable in one week.

Hang in there... while not all bugs will be fixed for the next version, the highest priority ones will.  In order of priority:

1 - Bugs that prevent a show from running at all
2 - Not a show stopper, but there isn't a workaraound either
3 - Things with a workaround
4 - Interface annoyances

Exceptions: We are adding an RGB color picker and a "create controller" wizard while fixing the bugs.

Now that we are in October things move a bit slower as every change to the code has to be reviewed very carefully to prevent completely destabilizing Aurora so close to the Christmas season.  We hope to have RGB, controller wizard, and bugs of type 1 & 2 above completely ready by November 1.

At least I sure hope we do... I have a show to set up and lots of sequences to create as well!!!  I haven't started anything on my own display yet... which means I am way behind this year!

Will the color picker  allow us to have multiple colors on one channel while designing sequences or is it just for Firefly.

-------------
Jeff

Posted By: JonB256
Date Posted: 14 Oct 2008 at 10:48pm

Jeff, the color picker will be for FireFly controller channels once we can update Firefly to "Native" mode. (won't be used if running Firefly in the Legacy mode).

The RGB (color picker) is just for Firefly, though perhaps in the future, there might be a way to "slave" three 16 channel LOR or D-Light controllers to make them behave like a Firefly.

-------------
JonB - D-Light user

Actually, the RGB tool will be usable on any supported devices (the channel properties will show 3 device/channel options... one for red, one for green, and one for blue).  Yes, this means you can drive red, green, and blue "color wash" floodlights from an AC or DC controller and use the color picker to choose what color to throw at the house.

With Firefly the D/C options will automatically assume the 2nd and 3rd DC making it a bit easier to set up the channel (only have to set up the primary) and the sequence will compile to take advantage of the native mode commands so as to use less network bandwidth and to handle the new effects.
