That is about the reaction that I expected!  Yes, this is real.  We finished the legal details on Friday.

Aurora was supposed to go to 1.0 release today at the same time as this announcement, but we are still working out some minor Vista install issues, so 1.0 will be coming out tomorrow instead of today.  I gave Darryl the green light to make the press release in the past hour.

I'll let the dust settle a little bit and will answer any questions in this thread.

I'm a Spectrum user.  As you'd expect, the biggest concern is our old sequences.  I saw the notification email said there was an import feature.  Has this been known to work well, or is it something being added to accomodate this change?

The Spectrum import has been used with Aurora for quite some time, and works very well. Be aware that the layout/operation of Aurora is a bit different than Spectrum, but you will quickly become used to it. There is an entire section on HELLLP! elsewhere on this forum. Don't be afraid to ask even the stupidest (seemingly) questions. We'll get you through it!

I myself own both Spectrum and Aurora.  I think this is a match made in heaven!

Mike has done a fantastic job on Aurora, and who is better than Dlight on the hardware end? NOBODY!

After the shock of  all this settles a bit,  I am sure that everyone will agree this was the best thing that could happen. I look forward to the future becuase it will only get better together!

Beavis,

You will be impressed with what Aurora will do, it will import your spectrum files with out a problem, you can import and re use the channels again and again, its all done, you wont have to build your channel line up again! I have imported all of my spectrum with out one issue.

Question.....coming from D-light software......how many machines can we have full versions on?

Spectrum allowed for 3 I believe.

I sequence on my work computer and my show runs at home.

Thanks

Going to let Michael field this one in its entirety, but there is no problem with using Aurora on two machines.

Aurora is licensed for as many computers as are required to run one show location.

Mike,

That is clear as mud...will there be a limit? I show on one and build on desktops at home and laptops away, sometimes sneaking in some programming at work.

ok...."as many computers as are required to run one show location".....that wording is kind of confusing.   Am I going to be able to have it on my work machine and my home machine to run the show?   I sequece at work after hours....bigger computer, dual monitors, and NO interuptions from my wife....Big%20smile

They never run at the same time.

webtech,

What you are doing is completely ok.  So long as you aren't playing back shows at more than one location (e.g at you house and your friends house across town) you are fine.  You are welcome to create sequences at home, work, in orbit on the ISS, etc... you just shouldn't control lights at more than one location.

At any rate, y'all are a fairly trustworthy group so Aurora hasn't been created with top secret phone home mechanisms and hard limits.  Yes, this means you could violate the licensing and share your key a zillion times to put us out of business... but I'm trusting that our customers will not do that!

Thanks for clearing that up, I/we will honor all the work you have done and make sure we use the software like its intended.  Besides, its too much work to have more than one location!

What Michael didn't mention, though, is that if you do run a show on more than one machine, it will dial out and order 1000 pizzas using your credit card number!

In all my travels into the underside of the 'net (undergrounds/pirate/virii, etc.) have yet to ever see a light sequencer posted. I think that speaks volumes for the lighting community, and speaks volumes for Michael as well!

To be honest I expected D-light to quit supporting Spectrum because frankly it was inferior to even the first Logan Player. Aurora is far superior and the new users that are coming along will also see this. This is not a bandaid to the short falls of Spectrum but a true enhancement. This is a top notch product and I'm sure it will eventually take over or be emulated by the rest. In my eyes the D-light Hardware is best in class and the Aurora software is the best in class together they make a great show.

I think that he's saying that you may use it however you'd like, as long as you only use it for a single display while trying not to put a number anywhere.

Fine. You're so smart you rig up the lights.

okay, since there no "I am an IDIOT" button yet!!!

I have my original install on my home computer (man, de ja vue???) how do I get a license key for my work computer? I haven't upgraded yet from .1, I haven't started to seq yet so I didn't need too. I haven't even opened Aurora in quite some time so the answer may just be right there.

Get your license key for your earlier version
Download the new S/W version from here ->
http://www.aurorashow.com/downloads/aurora_1_0_0.zip - http://www.aurorashow.com/downloads/aurora_1_0_0.zip

Insert you license key and the demo mode goes away and the S/W is fully registered :-)

One feature I actually used in Spectrum, that I'm not sure everyone did, was tap mode.  Seemed like the easiest way to lay out a preliminary grid on a song.  Maybe it's just the old drummer part of me coming out.

Is there anything like that?

Or maybe Beat Detection helps out with that?  Not sure how it works.

You're exactly right about beat detection and how it works.  If you look at the audio view along the very top of the screen you will see little gray marks every so often those marks are the major beats of the song.  Drop your event timing marks at each one and you're golden.

We need a tutorial on how to read the spectrogram.  The beat detection works to an extent (the algorithm picks up a few extras and drops a few sometimes), but once you know how to read the spectrogram everything becomes very clear.

In general, lower on the spectrogram is bass, higher is treble.  Colors from blue-cyan-green-yellow-red are from low to high in volume respectively.

A song with a heavy bass rhythm will show red blobs near the bottom of the spectrogram.

My best recommendation is to load up some of your favorite songs and learn what the display is telling you.  You can also toggle over to the "classic" amplitude view or just a certain music note with the "A" key.

Nobody else will say it.LOL

Use Wizards in Winter - it has a wide range of frequencies and is repetitive.

Will go ahead and do a video tutorial tonight and get a link posted.

Hey, this ain't PC or CC!  I love WIW, and I don't care who knows it!

(insert the sound of any respect that anyone has ever had for me hitting the ground.....)

WIW is a good one to familiarize yourself with the Spectrogram for the rock sound.

Another one I like to use to show off how much more you see with the spectrogram versus the classic display is TSO's "Faith Noel".  Faith Noel is so highly compressed that the classic amplitude display looks like a flat topped plateau... but in the Spectrogram all becomes very clear.

You might also want to load up some stuff with vocals so you can see what voices look like compared to the rest of the music.

Michael,
I kinda forgot all of that stuff I've just gotten so use to knowing what I'm looking for, now if I can just sit down long enough to finish my darn sequences.
