Because we all know we will ALL be using Wizards In Winter...

I found this on the TSO site today!

"Decorate your house to TSO!
TSO and Forest City are sponsoring a nationwide house decorating contest. We want you to create your own holiday light show to TSO music. The prizes include a free trip to Chicago to see TSO live as well as Gift Cards for use at your local Forest City Malls . For details click here: http://www.symphonyinlights.com/ - http://www.symphonyinlights.com "

If you do this, please post you Youtube link here too so we can all see how we each set up our shows!

Any chance we can get this subject pinned so it stays where folks can see it at the top?

Read the "fine print" of the contest rules.

It can easily be interpreted that one you submit a video, ALL intellectual rights escheat to the contest organizer. This means that you cannot post that video anywhere else - ever. It can also be considered that the sequence file used in the video cannot be used again as well.

When you get lawyers and the convoluted legalese involved, all bets are off.

LC....yeah.....that dam fine print   LOL

I wonder if they would let me change location and give me a trip to new york city to see them....going to chicago is kind of a "so what" for me.....all expense paid trip....hour drive in a limo to the concert.   They will probably say since I live so close, they will just take me home after the concert..Ermm

So? Change a few notes, swap a few colors, and it's a "different" display.

You are taking the fun out of it folks.

The idea of changing the show a little does hold true.  Frankly, anyone that rolls past your yard can film it and it is 'their' recording and the recording is their Intellectual Property(IP). However they do not own the IP to the sequence itself.  If it is visible from a public place anyone can make a copy of what they can observe and they own the recording, not the show or the event that they observed.  Technically you can move your video camera 6 inches to the left, film it again and you have a new video with all new IP rights for you to post where ever you want.  Keep in mind that you have to Youtube it before they accept your sbumittal anyways.... Ever read the fine print of Youtube??

When it all boils down, the big deal with them taking rights to the video is that if they reuse it somewhere they don't want to pay you royalties or ask your permission to reuse it for their advertising.  It is highly unlikely that they would try to take ownership of the intellectual property of the sequence itself and in a court of law if there was wording in the contest rules to that effect odds are they would be ruled "unconscionable" as it would be extremely draconian and one sided that they take all your efforts and work just so you could submit something for a contest that your probably wouldn't win.

To put this in perspective, if you ever won a radio contest you inadvertently gave the radio station rights to eternally use your voice in that particular 'appearance' on their show forever as well.   This isn't that big of a deal.  If you want to enter don't be scared and just do it.

If you really want to read between the lines, TSO just gave the world the rights to use three of their songs in public viewings so long as it is synchronized to lights and submitted prior to the contest end.  While I haven't read the fine print I doubt that they have a clause that you have to purchase the music prior to playing it for this.  In many states it is illegal to make people pay to enter a publicly offered contest so purchasing the songs is probably not a requirement (but I could be wrong).  Likewise there is probably nothing that says you can only use their music for 'X' number of days so in essence they gave those 3 songs away for free to anyone that enters this contest.  Of course, if they read this post odds are they will add that clause.

Additionally how would their corporate image look it they sued you for using the same show again next year.  Lets not fear the legal reaper on this and JUST DO IT!

I love it...you get a $1000 dollar trip that you then have to pay taxes on and they get to use your video for endless advertising......wonder if Carson will tell us how much he sold his for?    just kidding..   Some how I think the people doing all the hard work are getting the short end of the stick.

Isn't that the point of those contests?
Crate all the hype, get all the publicity, and then drop 1% of what you make from just putting the event on?

Somebody has to do the work.  Everything I've seen that Carson has done since the WWW hype has been based on the one sequence that made him famous.  But fame doesn't mean that you're talented...it just means that you got noticed.

I am a little annoyed with them bringing in the guy with the 'original' light show too.  He might have gotten noticed first but his show inst the best and he wasn't the first as far as I know.  I watched the videos of the mall and frankly I wasn't all that impressed.  They could have done better with the resources they used IMO.  His shows are nice but they lack some of the inspiration and raw ingenuity and imagination that you see through out  the community.

I can't say mine are any better though :)

I guess TSO has sort of become a tradition for light animators.
I too watched the vids - Ho Hum, just another variation on a theme.

Just imagine what we could do with that sort of budget! Shocked

See, Tara and I enjoy Holdman's... The entire display is fully rotated between R/G/W. Very clean and crisp.

I think we like TSO because there are good beats to follow. Doing something like Let it snow, it's mostly vocals and minimal beats to follow so there's a ton of invention to match up with the audio.
That and it's just lively and animated so we can really get our lights going all over with them.

Frankly TSO is the sort of music I like and my generation grew up with.  Classic is nice but too simple for me.  Being my first Christmas display I will be probably be doing 2 TSO and 1 classic.  I have the 'honor' of going to Montreal the first week of December so I imagine I might build another show while I am freezing to death up there.  I am sure the entire time I will be wishing i had 250,000 lights to run.

hum... 'my' generation.... Well, I'm in the MTV generation, but do love the classics. I've already done some Bing Crosby. I don't think that Evenescence, Lacuna Coil, Disturbed, or Slipknot would work very well in a christmas show.

Hey, I just listened to "My Immortal", and it's got some TSO-flavored moments.  But then again, anything seems Christmassy with the WMP "Yule Log" visualization. Thumbs%20Up

I love that visualization; I use it year round!  It was rather interesting picking out patriotic music for my Independence Day show and watching flames dance from a log.LOL

Also just listened to some YouTube Evenescence - Some might be fantastic for Halloween animations!

I had the music from 'Calling all Fiends' compilation playing for Halloween. I will be using more of that next year.  We are adding a 14'+ devil next year that we picked up today on clearance.  Shame TSO doesn't do Halloween music contests...  WHile I felt sorry for the little kids there was a certain amount of pride knowing my yard scared them enought that they didnt want to enter my driveway.

Not for Vista, hu?
She does some really good music. There are a number of Piano solo's that she plays. You should see some of the live stuff that she does. Dressing in heavy Goth style clothes running around, and loud, clear vocals. I don't know how she does it, I get tired after going up and down the ladder too many times. LOL

I have the Anywhere But Home DVD.  First caught of glimpse of Amy Lee while watching the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_in_Rio - Rock in Rio Lisboa 2004 concert on Mexican TV when we were vacationing in Cancun a few years back.  Been hooked on http://www.evanescence.com/ - Evanescence ever since.

But then I have a thing for little brunettes. Thumbs%20Up

Before YouTube pulls them, here's her Tonight Show appearance from 10/13.

I just left my local TSO show. Was a pretty good show. They played a new song from "an upcoming album" that will be an excellent Halloween song.  Anyone else heard it or know the name of it? The entire group chants in it.  If it was singing Christmas stuff I couldnt make it out as i was transfixed on the sound of the song itself.

The "upcoming" album - upcoming for over a year now, and due to be released mid-09 is called "The Night Castle". Rumored to be Christmas-sy,  but.....

the music was more gothic/gregorian chant-ish and closer to what I knew of them 20 years ago as Savatage.
