I was messing around with a hardware dongle last night and was having problems getting a signal down the cat5 (turned out to be a bad cable). Anyway, one thing I noticed is that my dongle was coming up as COM12. I went into the Device Manager (Start / right click on My Computer / Manage -> Device Manager) and expanded Ports. It showed COM 3-11 as in use. I was charging a MP3 player, but otherwise had nothing connected.
Does anyone know why all those ports were in use? Just a curiosity thing, as I can live with COM12. I can go into the Properties for that device into the advanced settings for that port and change it to COM4, but I'm not sure that's something I should be doing. Leave well enough alone? |
